Jabber

Jabber is a collection of open, XML-based protocols for instant messaging. Unlike most instant messaging protocols, Jabber is an open standard. As with e-mail, an account on any Jabber server can communicate with users on other Jabber servers.

At �鶹��Ƶ

�鶹��Ƶ runs a Jabber server at jabber.gac.edu. You'll need to download and install one of in order to use our Jabber server. Note that these software titles are not officially supported by Technology Services.

Configuring

Adium

Adium is a popular Apple OSX multi-protocol instant messenger client that supports Jabber. To configure Adium to use your Jabber account, please follow the following steps:

1. Choose Preferences under the Adium menu
2. Click on Accounts
3. Click the (+) to add the Jabber account.
4. Choose Jabber
5. Type in your �鶹��Ƶ username (your e-mail address without the @gustavus.edu part) for the screen name and your e-mail password for the Password.
6. Click on Automatically connect on launch
7. Under the Options bar, type in jabber.gac.edu in the Connect Server field.
8. Click Ok.

Gaim

Gaim is a popular multi-protocol instant messenger client that supports Jabber.

Gaim 1.5

The current stable version of Gaim is 1.5. Do the following to configure Gaim to use your Jabber account:

1. Choose Accounts from the Tools menu and click the Add button.
2. Select the Jabber protocol
3. Enter your �鶹��Ƶ username (your e-mail address without the @gustavus.edu part) for the screen name and your e-mail password for the Password.
4. Click Save.

If you want, you can check the "Auto-login" box to automatically connect to your Jabber account when you open Gaim. Click the "Online" checkbox to connect.

Gaim 2.0b

The newest beta version of Gaim is 2.0b. Currently, this does not work correctly with our Jabber server, but we are working to correct the issue. The following steps are how Gaim 2.0b should be set up, if it worked correctly with our server:

1. From the Accounts menu, choose Add/Edit
2. Click the Add button
3. Select the Jabber protocol
4. Enter your �鶹��Ƶ username (without the @gustavus.edu part) for Screen name
5. Enter gac.edu for the Server.
6. Enter your e-mail password for Password
7. If you want, check the Remeber password box, but keep in mind this is stored in a file on your local computer in plain-text, so it presents a security risk.
8. Under the Advanced Tab, enter jabber.gac.edu for Connect Server
9. Click the Save button

Psi

Psi is a popular, multi-platform Jabber client. To configure Psi to use �鶹��Ƶ' Jabber server, do the following:

1. Under the Account tab, enter username@gac.edu for Jabber ID
2. If you want, enter your �鶹��Ƶ password (your e-mail password). Keep in mind that storing your password locally on your computer is a security risk.
3. Under the Connection tab, check the all of the boxes, and enter jabber.gac.edu for Host, using port 5223.
4. Click on the Save button and Close the Jabber Accounts window
5. Change your status on the bottom to Online
