Cascade Checklist
Checklist created to help with the cascade process.
Step One: Check Crashplan for Backup Status/Run Sync
- Have a dutyperson login to crashplan.gac.edu
- Enter the computer name of the device in the search field.
- Verify the backup is at least 99% complete.
- Run CrashPlan Sync
Step One, part 2: Back up computer with Deploystudio
- Plug in the computer's power and ethernet at the laptop station or in new setup room.
- Boot to the network (Hold N while it powers on, you will see a globe)
- Log in with your 鶹Ƶ username and password
- Select Create Backup
- For the backup name, use their username_MMDDYYYY as the name.
- If no disk is available to backup, they may have personally encrypted their hard drive without using the 鶹Ƶ managed FileVault. They will need to turn Filevault off for it to successfully back up.
Step Two: Bootstrap the Mac
Bootstrapping is similar to imaging but we're only installing a base operating system and Managed Software Center. This makes bootstrapping really fast and allows us to update software and computer setup more easily.
- Connect a bootstrap drive to the Mac.
- Boot the Mac to Recovery Mode by powering on the Mac and holding down command+r
- Select Utilities --> Terminal
- Type the command /Volumes/macOS/run in the Terminal window.
- Terminal will ask which drive you'd like to bootstrap. Select the drive labeled Macintosh HD. If you don't see a drive labeled Macintosh HD you will need to partition the drive with Disk Utility first.
- After you've selected the drive Terminal will ask you if you want to erase the target volume before install. Type y and press return.
Step Three: Apply Configuration and Updates
Once the Mac has been bootstrapped it will reboot and you will be presented with the macOS initial setup window. Follow the onscreen prompts.
Important: Make sure you see a screen that says "Configuration Available". If you don't see this screen the Mac will need to be moved to the correct MDM server. Any duty person should be able to move it for you if you provide them with the serial number of the Mac.
Once you've progressed through the macOS Setup windows Managed Software Center will automatically begin downloading any applicable updates.
Step Four: Data Restoration
As usual, the data transfer is the trickiest part of a Cascade. Follow these steps carefully.
- Reset the users domain password if this has not been done yet.
- While logged in as the user, open and sign into CrashPlan as the user.
- Choose ‘Replace Existing’, click Start, Choose the previous computer's backup, click continue, click transfer files.
- You will now be prompted to select which files to restore. In many, but not all, cases you will select the users Home folder located in Macintosh HD → Users → <username>. Then click Get Files.
- If the username in step 4 does not match the Account name that you created in step one ask a Dutyperson for help. If it matches, continue to the next step.
- You will now be asked what to do with the files you’ve selected.
- Save files to: Original Location
- If File Exists: Overwrite
- Permissions: Current
- Click Go
- Click Continue
- This next screen will continue to download their data. Depending on how much data they have, the restore could take 1-2 days or more.
- Go to System Preferences, go to Energy Saver, and choose never, click ok.
- Click on the CrashPlan icon, then click on the gear icon, select Preferences, then Usage, then change the CPU percentage to 80 from 20.
- The CrashPlan app may log you out, however the data is still downloading.
- When checking to see if your restore is complete, if you are unable to log in as the user, exit out of CrashPlan, re-open it, and log in.
- Once the data downloads and says complete, click next.
- Then click "Continue." You should then sign back in as the user and click "Finish."
- Reverse the changes you made in Energy Saver and to the CPU percentage.
- Verify the users data in Finder. Also ensure that, if they use MacMail, make sure that everything looks correct, especially with regards to local and server based mail.
Step Five: Verify Crashplan Restore
Check to make sure that Crashplan has restored data successfully. Check bookmarks, Documents, Desktop to verify their data is in place.
Step Six: Install Printers & Update/Install Other Software
- Use Managed Software Center to install the printers.
- Use Managed Software Center to install software that the user wants installed. Refer to ticket for specialized software requests.
- Click Updates to make sure all installed software is up to date.
Step Seven: Universal Cascade Letter
Customize (replace the items in bold italic that are placeholders) and print a File:2018macletter.docx for each user.
Step Eight: Delivery
Deliver the prepared Mac to the user and assist them with signing into Enterprise Connect.
- Sync their password using the 鶹Ƶ user setting page.
- Open Enterprise Connect and have them sign in with their 鶹Ƶ username and password.
- When prompted, enter their login password ( ‘changeme’ ). Enterprise Connect should report the passwords are in sync.
- Answer any additional questions they may have.
Step Nine: Store Old Equipment
Put the users old laptop into storage once delivery has been completed.
