Cascade Checklist
Checklist created to help with the cascade process.
Step One: Check Crashplan for Backup Status
- Have a dutyperson login to crashplan.gac.edu
- Enter the computer name of the device in the search field.
- Verify the backup is at least 99% complete.
Step Two: Create the user
Power on the Mac and follow the on screen prompts. When creating the user enter their name and use their 鶹Ƶ username for the ‘Account name:’ field. Use ‘changeme’ as the password.
Note: You must be connected to a network for this to work.
Step Three: Updates
Once you’ve completed the Setup Assistant the Mac desktop will appear. Shortly thereafter Managed Software Center will open and begin downloading updates. When updates have finished downloading click the install button.
Note: Enterprise Connect will open during while Managed Software Center is running. You can close out of it.
Step Four: Crashplan Restore
As usual, the data transfer is the trickiest part of a Cascade. Follow these steps carefully.
- Reset the users domain password.
- Open and sign into Crashplan as the user.
- Choose ‘Replace Device’
- You will now be prompted to select which files to restore. In many, but not all, cases you will select the users Home folder located in Macintosh HD → Users → <username>
- If the username in step D does not match the Account name that you created in step one ask a Dutyperson for help. If it matches, continue to the next step.
- You will now be asked what to do with the files you’ve selected.
- Save files to: Original Location
- If File Exists: Replace
- Follow the on screen instructions for Crashplan to initiate the restore. Depending on how much data they have, the restore could take 1-2 days or more.
Step Five: Verify Crashplan Restore
Check to make sure that Crashplan has restored data successfully. Check bookmarks, Documents, Desktop to verify their data is in place.
Step Six: Install Printers & Update/Install Other Software
- Use Managed Software Center to install the printers.
- Use Managed Software Center to install software that the user wants installed. Refer to ticket for specialized software requests.
- Click Updates to make sure all installed software is up to date.
Step Seven: Universal Cascade Letter
Customize (replace the items in bold italic that are placeholders) and print a Mac 2018 Cascade Letter - Existing Employee GTS Transfer for each user user.
Step Eight: Delivery
Deliver the prepared Mac to the user and assist them with signing into Enterprise Connect.
- Sync their password using the 鶹Ƶ user setting page.
- Open Enterprise Connect and have them sign in with their 鶹Ƶ username and password.
- When prompted, enter their login password ( ‘changeme’ ). Enterprise Connect should report the passwords are in sync.
- Answer any additional questions they may have.
Step Nine: Store Old Equipment
Put the users old laptop into storage once delivery has been completed.
