All computers that are owned by 鶹Ƶ use a special naming convention to quickly identify them.

The format depends on whether the computer is a personal machine for a specific faculty/staff member.

Faculty/staff computers

Faculty and Staff computers are named with their 鶹Ƶ username followed by a dash and a number. The number is the first available number based on the number of network devices the user has registered.

example: jsmith-3

Other computers

Other computers on campus have a special 9-character code which helps to quickly identify their location and purpose.

An fictitious example might be AA100MW00.

This is the number of the room that the computer is located.

  • The number must be exactly three digits long. Leading zeros may be necessary to adhere to the convention.
    • Example: Room 12 becomes 012.
  • If the room number contains letters, these must be dropped.
    • Example: Room 212 D becomes 212.

This letter represents the operating system installed on the machine.
