Jabber is a collection of open, XML-based protocols for instant messaging. Unlike most instant messaging protocols, Jabber is an open standard. As with e-mail, an account on any Jabber server can communicate with users on other Jabber servers.

Jabber at ΒιΆΉΚΣΖ΅

ΒιΆΉΚΣΖ΅ runs a Jabber server at jabber.gac.edu. You'll need to download and install one of in order to use our Jabber server. Note that these software titles are not officially supported by Technology Services.

Configuring Gaim

Gaim is a popular multi-protocol instant messenger client that supports Jabber. To configure Gaim to use your Jabber account, take the following steps:

  1. Choose Accounts from the Tools menu and click the Add button.
  2. Select the Jabber protocol
  3. Enter your ΒιΆΉΚΣΖ΅ username (your e-mail address without the @gustavus.edu part) for the screenname and your e-mail password for the Password.
  4. Click Save.

If you want, you can check the "Auto-login" box to automatically connect to your Jabber account when you open Gaim. Click the "Online" checkbox to connect.
