The Culpeper Center Reading/Studying Lounge

The Culpeper Language Center is an integral component of the Department of Modern Languages, Literatures, and Cultures. The Center is a specialized language learning computer and multi-media lab which provides students access to resources and materials in and about foreign languages. The center consists of a Macintosh-based computer lab and multimedia classroom, a media development station, a international television and DVD viewing station, a reading/studying lounge, and the office of the Culpeper Center.

The Culpeper center is maintained by the Culpeper Director and is staffed by approximately a dozen Culpeper student employees. All members of the Culpeper staff are trained to support all the equipment in the labs, with specific focus on the computer programs most heavily used by the Department of Modern Languages, Literatures, and Cultures

The Culpeper Language Center is funded by the Culpeper Foundation and the Barbara Osher Foundation for the study of foreign languages.

The Culpeper Language Center is located on the first floor of Vickner Hall in room number 108.

  • Mon–Thurs: 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.
  • Fri: 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
  • Sat: Noon–6:00 p.m.
  • Sun: 1:00–10:30 p.m.

Calendar of reservations and events

The Culpeper Center is routinely reserved for classes and other events, and is also the meeting place for most of the foreign language tutors.

Equipment

The Culpeper Language Center computer lab currently contains 25 Macintosh-based computers, one Epson scanner, one[HP Laserjet 4100 printer, a digital projector, DVD player, VCR and media cart containing a television, international VCR and DVD player. The Center's international television and DVD viewing station is currently under construction, but will soon contain a 42 inch LCD flat screen TV, connected to an region-free DVD player, multi-region VCR, and DISH Network receiver. The Culpeper's DISH Network subscription includes international programing for Spanish, German, French, Russian and Japanese. The Center's media development station includes two ReplayTVs, and three DISH receivers, an international VCR, DVD, and MiniDV dubbing system as well as a Macintosh computer containing media editing programs such as iMovie and iDVD, as well as an iSight webcam and microphone for video/audio chatting and pod/vod-casting.
