The best way to avoid getting spyware and adware is by not installing "high-risk" applications like peer to peer media downloading software, and other suspect "freeware," and "shareware" programs.

Use caution when installing software. Make sure your operating system, software and browser plug-ins are all up to date. Use a long and unique password. �鶹��Ƶ requires a passphrase of at least 15 characters.

There are many advantages to bringing a laptop to campus:

�鶹��Ƶ uses Aruba Networks wireless controllers and access points. We typically see 5000 active clients on the �鶹��Ƶ wireless network daily, but more than 10,000 unique devices will connect every month.

There are many challenges to managing such a large wireless network, interference from other devices is the most common cause of connection issues. Microwave ovens, Bluetooth devices, cordless phones, video cameras, game consoles, Roku, home routers, mobile hotspots, and more, can cause interference with the �鶹��Ƶ wireless network. For the best experience on campus, �鶹��Ƶ Technology Services recommends 5 GHz or “Dual Band” devices be used whenever possible.

==Network Registration==
All �鶹��Ƶ-owned network devices on the campus network must be registered. Student devices, employee personal devices, and Guests of the College can connect to the �鶹��Ƶ wireless network without registering.

==Wireless Networks, GHz and Mbps, Why Do I Care?==
2.4 GHz, 5 GHz AC, 802.11a, 802.11n, channels and Mbps what does it all mean?

Wireless signals come in two bands - 2.4 and 5 GHz. Wireless standards are named - 802.11A, B, G, N and AC. Different WiFi networks have different bands, standards and speeds.

The �鶹��Ƶ WiFi network has 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz (Dual) bands available, the 5 GHz will work better in more places, be faster and less likely to disconnect.

If you are looking to buy a new computer or network device, be sure to buy one with 5GHz AC or Dual Band wireless. All new Macintosh laptops are 5 GHz AC. If you are buying a Windows computer, be sure it has 5 GHz AC. You will have a better wireless experience at �鶹��Ƶ. Please see [[Tips for Purchasing a 5 Ghz Windows Laptop]].

Nearly all locations on campus are covered by the �鶹��Ƶ wireless network, with a few exceptions. You may experience limited connectivity or poor connectivity depending on your location within a building.

Technology Services (GTS) is the primary technology provider on campus. Most technology equipment is supported and purchased through Technology Services.

Every year, faculty and staff are asked to submit technology requests. Beginning in February 2022, the request processes for both populations will happen at the same time, using the same process. Currently, there are 87 technology-enhanced classrooms complete with a projector, wireless networking, laptop hookup, and DVD/VCR player hookups. Classrooms require that faculty and students to use a laptop to connect to the projector. Each year, the number of this type of classroom continues to rise.

===What public access for computing is available to students, parents, and guests of the college? Are there any Internet cafes?===

There are computers for public use in the [[Library]], [[Jackson Campus Center|Campus Center]], Student Union, and parents can log in as a guest in the [[Residence Halls]]' [[computer labs]]. During the academic year 20-21, the number of public use computers have been limited. Guests of the College may connect to the �鶹��Ƶ wireless network. No registration needed.
