This page explains how to properly add a printer on a faculty/staff members machine on either a Macintosh or Windows platform.

Checking the Printers
#Before you install anything, double check to make sure the desired printer isn't already installed. It's possible that the printer isn't set to be the default printer, and the user has no idea.

Checking a Windows Machine
For a Windows machine, go to the Start Menu (or spherical Windows icon in the lower left hand corner of the screen), then click "Devices and Printers." This will open a new menu displaying all of the installed devices and printers. If their desired printer is installed and is not the default, right click the printer icon and select the "Set as Default Printer" option. If the printer is not installed, refer to Installing a Printer (Windows.

Checking a Macintosh Machine
For a Macintosh, click on the apple icon located in the upper left hand corner of the screen. A drop down menu will appear with the option "System Preferences." Click on that, and a new window will open. Under the "Hardware" menu, there is an icon called "Print and Fax." All of the installed printers will be located under that icon. If the desired printer is installed but not set to default, right click it, and select "Set as Default Printer." If the printer is not installed, refer to Installing a Printer (Macintosh)

Installing a Printer (Windows)
#Go to the start menu as before, and open the same "Devices and Printers" window.
#Select "Add a Printer" located on the upper menu bar of the window.
#Select the "Add a Local Printer" option located in the following window.
#Two options are then given: "Use an existing port" or "Create a new port." Select Create a new port, and in the drop down menu select Standard TCP/IP Port.
#You are then asked for the Hostname/IP address (See Collecting the Hostname/IP address).
##Remember, hostnames are entered in the format of: Printer'sName.subdomain.gac.edu.
##It is suggested that you enter the printer's hostname, as it's IP address may change over time. However, if the hostname for what ever reason does not work, the IP address is fine.
#The drivers for the printer must then be installed.
#If you are using a Windows 7 platform, simply locate HP under the "Manufacturer" scroll menu, and select HP Universal Printer PS under the adjacent "Printers" scroll menu.
#If using a Windows XP platform, you will have to locate the exact driver of the printer from the "Printers" scroll menu. If the printer is an HP Laser Jet 4200, locate the "HP LJ 4200" driver.
#In the next window, if given the option Use the driver that is currently installed(recommended), we recommend you do that.
#Give the printer a name that the faculty/staff member will be able to identify. (Ex: Department Printer, Color Printer by Huff's Office, Printer outside the door, etc)
#The printer will then install, and you are given the option to print a test page. Do that.
#Once test page prints, you can click "Finish" and exit out.

Installing a Printer (Macintosh)
#Navigate to Apple Menu/System Preferences/Print & Fax as before.
#Click the + symbol to add printers.
#Click the appropriate printer from the "Default Browser" or, if the desired printer is not there, add them via Hostname or IP address (See Collecting the Hostname/IP address).
#If added via IP address make sure to change the name to something that reflect the official printer name (Ex: Department Printer, Color Printer by Huff's Office, Printer outside the door, etc).
##Remember, hostnames are entered in the format of: Printer'sName.subdomain.gac.edu.
##It is suggested that you enter the printer's hostname, as it's IP address may change over time. However, if the hostname for what ever reason does not work, the IP address is fine.
#The printer will then appear in the list of installed printer. Make sure to right click on it and "Set as Default Printer" if the faculty/staff member desires that.

Collecting the Hostname/IP address
Hostname
#Log into greg.gac.edu/admin
#Find the printer by searching its IP address, or by searching the department's abbreviation followed by a PB (or PC if color printer) in the username, and typing "printer" in the comments field.
#the search result should yield the desired printer.
IP address
#if for some reason you are not able to locate the hostname, or are unable to add the printer via hostname, gather its IP address either by searching it on greg, or collecting it from the printers configuration page.
#to print a configuration page, go to the physical printer, hit the menu selection buttons until Print Config Page displays on the small LCD screen.
#hit the "OK" button, and the page will print.
Mbeyer2/gts/w/index.php?title=Adding_a_Faculty_Department_Printer&diff=23303Adding a Faculty Department Printer2011-02-22T20:21:13Z
Mbeyer2:

Remember, hostnames are entered in the format of:
Printer'sName.subdomain.gac.edu.

It is suggested that you enter the printer's hostname, as it's IP address may change over time. However, if the hostname for what ever reason does not work, the IP address is fine.

Installing a Printer (Macintosh)
#Navigate to Apple Menu/System Preferences/Print & Fax
#Click the + symbol to add printers. Click the appropriate printer from the Default Browser or add them via IP Printer. If added via IP address make sure to change the name to something that reflect the official printer name.
Mbeyer2/gts/w/index.php?title=Adding_a_Faculty_Department_Printer&diff=23299Adding a Faculty Department Printer2011-02-22T19:56:02Z
Mbeyer2: Created page with "This page explains how to properly add a printer on a faculty/staff members machine on either a Macintosh or Windows platform. ==Checking the Printers== #Before you install anyt..."

Follow this article to scan your documents using the scanners located in residential halls, or academic buildings. All the residential hall scanners are connected to an iMac computer running both Windows 7 and Macintosh Snow Leopard. Use the following instructions to operate the scanners:

Windows 7
such as a CD, DVD, or jump drive

7. Remove photo/document from scanner

Macintosh Snow Leopard
Prepare the Scanner
#Verify the scanner is on by checking if the green light on the front or side is lit. If not, press the power button located on the front of the scanner.
#Open the scanner and lay the item you'd like to scan on the bed of the scanner and then close the lid.

Open Image Capture
#Login to scanning station computer in the lab
#Press the Scan button on the front of the scanner. This will automatically open the Image Capture software located in Macintosh HD in the Applications folder.

Basic Settings
#Image Capture will open in Detailed Mode. You can make adjustments to suit your needs. If you are unsure what to choose just use the default values that are already selected for you. Some possible options are:
*Scan Mode: Set to Flatbed for standard photos or documents. If you are scanning a color slide choose Transparency Positive or for film negatives use Transparency Negative.
*Kind: Select if you would like your scan to be color, grayscale or black and white.
*Resolution: This is typically set to 300 DPI if you want to print out what you scanned in at the same size. If you are never going to print it out, this can be set to 72 DPI.
*Size: The size you would like your scan to end up being.
*Scan To: This is where you scan will be saved. You could save it in a folder on the computer, your home directory or even send it straight to iPhoto.
*Name: This will be the name of the file you are scanning to.
*Format: The file type you save your scan as. TIFF is a common option which is uncompressed. It gives the best quality, but takes up a lot of space. This is ideal for archiving. JPEG or PNG are other common options that yield a good quality picture, but have a smaller file size.
*Image Correction: Rejuvenates old photos by enhancing color and quality.
*Dust Removal: Removes dust marks on photos that are dirty.

Preview and Scan
#Click the Overview button at the bottom of the Image Capture window if you need to preview your work. If the preview scan worked, a sample of the image can be seen in the preview window in the middle of the Image Capture software.
#Fine tune what will be scanned by dragging a selection box around what you would like scanned.
#Click Scan when your preview scan looks correct.
